Per my last post, I committed that I would buy some reusable handkerchiefs so as to save the ancient forests (and also lessen my waste). Well, this was easier said than done. The first site I came across was good, but $10 for shipping a set of $15 hankies? Not so much… I decided to look at reusablebags.com, because I also need some muslin food bags and buying both would make the shipping costs a bit more reasonable. But hankettes are apparently not part of their assortment. Bummer!
So I started thinking, maybe the mainstream department stores have caught on and started carrying organic cotton handkerchiefs? Bed, Bath & Beyond? Nope. Macy’s? No (they do however have white monogrammed hankies). Target? Not unless you’re a bride or the mother of the bride (and even then you’re not getting organic). Sears? No. Whole Foods? No results found.
Then I came across a site that looked promising: betterforgrownups.com. They have a cool, alternative tissue product that looks like tissue, because it comes out of a box, but is really reusable. I was tempted until I saw the price tag: $34.95. Not quite in line with my frugal nature…
So, I gave up and ordered from a site that also has muslin food bags (score!) and took a $7.62 hit for “Parcel Post.” I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of said parcel.
I found this old blog entry and thought you might be interested in knowing that there are cool and well-made organic cotton handkerchiefs out there in the world without a lot of shipping costs attached to the price. Enjoy!
Hey. I just read your post. I invented an “evolution” of the handkerchief and am now selling them with lots of fan fair. It is a handkerchief book called the HankyBook :) Maybe you’ll be interested.
