Living a purposeful life means waking up every morning knowing why you are here on this planet.
It may be to teach children to read and write. It may be to heal people. It may be to make people laugh.
Whatever the purpose, it’s important. People who live long, healthy lives know their purpose. It may not be anything earth shattering, but it’s what keeps them going.
For those of us who are working, it is critical that our work has purpose. It can’t just be a paycheck at the end of the week.
Find Your Purpose
Do you know your purpose? If not, it’s time to find it. Think about what you’re really good at. Consider your hobbies – what you do for fun. And volunteer work.
Do any of these activities give your life purpose? Can you make a career of it?
It’s a Journey
This may be a long journey. It was for me. And I don’t think you ever fully arrive. Your purpose changes over time.
When you are young, your purpose may be to get a good education. Then when you have children, your purpose is to raise them in a loving manner (and keep them alive). And once the kids fly the coop, your purpose may be working for social justice or keeping the streets safe or preparing delicious food for friends to enjoy.
Do Work You Love
I keep coming back to the point that life is short. If you hate your job, do something about it. It’s not worth sticking with it.
Eliminate tasks that take away time from the things you love to do. Minimize email and social media (unless you love it). Make time for creativity.
Experience the satisfaction of a job well done. Of changing the world for the better in some small (or large) way.
