About a month ago, I read the book, “No Impact Man” by Colin Beavan. It inspired me. I was amazed to read about how he and his family slowly changed their habits over the course of a year to the point where they were consuming only local, seasonal, and unpackaged food. They stopped buying new stuff, getting take-out, watching TV, using electricity, using motorized transportation, and even using toilet paper. In return, they lost weight, became healthier, got to spend more time together and with friends, and obviously learned a lot along the way.
The non-profit organization, No Impact Project, provides guidelines and community support for the No Impact Experiment. This is a week-long experiment to reduce your impact on the planet one day at a time. It follows the same major steps that No Impact Man himself took during his year of carbon cleansing.
I signed up for the No Impact Experiment starting on Sunday, January 10th and I’m totally excited about it. I started reading the How-To Manual today and thought I’d share the agenda with you:
-
Sunday: Consumption
-
Monday: Trash
-
Tuesday: Transportation & Take Action
-
Wednesday: Food
-
Thursday: Energy
-
Friday: Water
-
Saturday: Giving back
-
Sunday: Eco-Sabbath
I’ll be blogging about the No Impact Experiment every day during this event. If you want to join in the fun, go to this site to register.
Note: I’m not giving up toilet paper.
I also have this book and couldn’t put it down :) I’m really impressed by how quickly this movement is spreading. I think I may give the No Impact week a go too; I look forward to reading your progress with it!
Good luck :D
Awesome! Let me know what you learn.
I admire your initiative! I think it’s great that you are challenging yourself, and thus those around you (such as myself!)
I don’t share this often, but: I once went about 3 days without toilet paper. I found it to be extremely empowering.
Thanks Friend! I think you get the No Impact prize for the no TP days. Maybe one day I’ll get there. :)
