Last week, I happened to see a flyer at Magpie Coffeehouse that caught my attention. It was a lecture by Curtis Ellis called “Ask Not What Your Country Can Feed You—Ask What You Can Feed Your Country.” I noted the time and place in my calendar and, tonight, I attended said lecture.
I knew that Curtis Ellis had made movies, but I didn’t know that he was one of the stars of the documentary King Corn. Once I figured this out, I knew I was in for a treat. I was right.
Ellis spent 45 minutes weaving an inspiring story with clips from the movie as well as a multitude of images culminating in a plug for FoodCorps, an AmeriCorps-style organization with a vision to bring gardening and local farm food to schools.
I couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard of this! (I am, after all, an angry mom…) And one of the 10 states in which they’re starting this program is Iowa!! And one of the service sites is the Environmental Studies Department at Luther College, which is right here in my little town!!!
Oh boy. This is exciting. Since I didn’t know about this, I figured some of you hadn’t heard of it either, so I’m spreading the word.
Thanks for listening.
